12 Day Rwenzori Margherita Peak Trek

A 12-day Rwenzori Margherita Peak trek is a serious mountain expedition for fit hikers who want to climb Uganda’s highest point on Mount Stanley. The route follows the Central Circuit through Rwenzori Mountains National Park, using the established hut system from Nyabitaba to John Matte, Bujuku, Elena, Kitandara and Guy Yeoman. The goal is Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres. The summit day involves steep alpine terrain, cold conditions and glacier travel with ropes, crampons and ice axes under guide supervision. This is not a casual hiking trip. It requires good fitness, proper gear and comfort walking for several hours in wet, muddy and high-altitude conditions. The itinerary allows time for arrival, preparation in Kasese, gradual altitude gain, summit attempt, descent, recovery and return to Entebbe or Kampala. It is suitable for hikers who want a fully supported Rwenzori expedition with mountain guides, porters, cooks, hut accommodation and clear logistics from arrival to departure.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Arrival and Transfer to Kasese

Your driver guide will pick you up from Entebbe, Kampala or your agreed location and transfer you to Kasese, near the Rwenzori Mountains. The drive takes most of the day, passing through western Uganda landscapes, towns and farming areas. Lunch is arranged en route. On arrival in Kasese, check in at your lodge and meet the mountain team for a trek briefing. Your guide will check key gear such as waterproof boots, warm layers, rain protection, gloves, headlamp, sleeping bag and personal medication. Dinner and overnight stay near Kasese or the Rwenzori trek base.

Day 2, Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

After breakfast, transfer to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park office at Nyakalengija, around 1,648 metres. You will complete registration, meet the porters, guides and ranger team, then begin the trek. The trail follows the Mubuku River before entering the mountain forest. This first trekking day introduces the wet and steep nature of the Rwenzori trails. You may see blue monkeys, forest birds and the colourful Rwenzori turaco. The route crosses the Mahoma River before climbing towards Nyabitaba Hut at 2,651 metres. Walking time is usually about 5 to 6 hours, depending on trail conditions and pace.

Day 3, Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

Leave Nyabitaba Hut and descend towards the river crossing before continuing into bamboo and heather zones. The trail becomes wetter and more demanding as you gain altitude. Expect mud, roots, boardwalks and misty forest sections. On clear days, views open towards Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. You will stop for lunch along the route before continuing through giant heather forest towards John Matte Hut. This is a longer and more demanding trekking day, usually taking 6 to 7 hours.

Day 4, John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

After breakfast at John Matte Hut, continue towards Bujuku Hut. The route crosses the Bujuku River and moves through the Upper Bigo Bog, one of the wettest and most memorable sections of the Central Circuit. Boardwalks may help in some areas, but hikers should still expect mud and slow movement. The trail continues towards Lake Bujuku, with views of Mount Baker to the south, Mount Stanley to the west and Mount Speke to the north when the weather is clear. Arrive at Bujuku Hut at 3,962 metres for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5, Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut

After breakfast, leave Bujuku Hut and follow the trail towards Elena Hut, the high-altitude base for the Margherita Peak summit attempt. The route climbs past Lake Bujuku and rises towards Groundsels Gully before reaching the area around Scott Elliott Pass. This stage is shorter than some previous days, but it is steep and demanding because of the altitude, rocks and colder conditions. Arrive at Elena Hut in the afternoon. The hut is basic and cold, so warm clothing and a good sleeping bag are essential. Your guide will brief you on the summit plan, weather conditions and equipment needed for the next morning.

Day 6, Margherita Peak Summit and Descent to Kitandara Hut

This is the most demanding day of the expedition. You start very early for the Margherita Peak summit attempt. The route climbs towards the Stanley Glacier and crosses cold, exposed alpine terrain using ropes, crampons and ice axes under guide supervision. The summit attempt depends on weather, glacier conditions, fitness and the guide’s safety assessment. If conditions allow, you continue to Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres, the highest point in Uganda. After the summit attempt, descend carefully towards Scott Elliott Pass and continue to Kitandara Hut. The descent can be tiring because of altitude, rocks, mud and long hours on your feet. Dinner and overnight stay at Kitandara Hut.

Day 7, Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut

After breakfast, leave Kitandara Hut and climb towards Freshfield Pass. This section offers wide alpine views when the weather is clear, including views towards Mount Baker, Mount Stanley and the western side of the range. After the pass, the trail begins a long muddy descent. You pass Bujangolo rock shelter, linked to the historic 1906 expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi, before continuing towards Guy Yeoman Hut. Dinner and overnight stay at Guy Yeoman Hut.

Day 8, Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyabitaba Hut

After breakfast, continue descending through the heather zone towards Nyabitaba Hut. The trail is narrow, muddy and can be hard on the knees, especially after several long mountain days. You pass waterfalls, forested sections and changing vegetation as the altitude drops. The air becomes warmer as you re-enter the bamboo and forest zones. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyabitaba Hut.

Day 9, Descent to Nyakalengija and Transfer to Kasese

After breakfast, take the final descent through the mountain forest towards Nyakalengija. At the park gate, you complete the trek, say goodbye to the mountain crew and may receive a certificate of completion. Your driver guide will meet you and transfer you to Kasese for rest, a hot shower and overnight stay.

Day 10, Rest and Recovery Day in Kasese

After several demanding days on the mountain, this day is reserved for rest and recovery in Kasese. You may relax at the lodge, organise your gear or take a light local visit if you feel strong enough. This day also acts as a useful buffer in case weather or mountain conditions affect the summit schedule. Dinner and overnight stay in Kasese.

Day 11, Travel from Kasese to Kampala or Entebbe

You will leave the mountains behind and drive back to Kampala or Entebbe. You will stop for lunch in Fort Portal town. The drive offers views of the Kibale Forest and rural villages. You will arrive at your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala in the evening.

Day 12, Departure from Entebbe International Airport

After breakfast, transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your international flight. This marks the end of your 12-day Rwenzori Margherita Peak trek.
