Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Kigali to Bwindi Through Cyanika or Katuna Border

Your driver guide will pick you up early from your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport and begin the journey north towards the Rwanda and Uganda border. The drive from Kigali to the southern sectors of Bwindi usually takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on the border process, road conditions and lodge location. The route passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills, small towns and cultivated landscapes before reaching Cyanika or Katuna border. At the border, you will need a valid passport and the correct visa documents for both Rwanda and Uganda. The East African Tourist Visa may be suitable for some travellers visiting Rwanda and Uganda on the same trip, but visa rules should be checked before travel. After crossing into Uganda, continue through the Kigezi highlands towards Rushaga or Nkuringo. This region is known for steep hills, terraced farms, cool air and forest views as you approach Bwindi. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in, have dinner and prepare for gorilla trekking the next morning. Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for gorilla trekking briefing. The briefing usually starts around 7:00 am to 8:00 am, depending on the sector and park arrangements. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the trekking rules, safety guidance, group allocation and how to behave around the gorillas. Visitors are placed in groups of up to eight people and assigned a specific gorilla family. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, the terrain and forest conditions. Trails may be steep, muddy and covered with thick vegetation, especially after rain. A reasonable level of fitness is helpful, and hiring a porter is recommended. Once the gorillas are found, you spend one hour observing them. You may see a silverback, mothers with infants, juveniles playing and family members feeding or resting. Flash photography is not allowed, and visitors must follow the distance guidance given by rangers. After the trek, return to the park headquarters for your certificate, then begin the drive back to Kigali. Arrival is usually in the evening. If flying out the same day, choose a late evening or night flight to allow enough time for border crossing and road delays.
