3 Day Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari

A 3-day Queen Elizabeth National Park safari is one of the best short Uganda wildlife safaris for travellers who want game drives, a boat cruise and scenic crater landscapes within a limited time. The safari starts from Kampala or Entebbe and follows the western Uganda route through the Equator, Mbarara and the foothills of the Rwenzori region. In the park, you explore the Kasenyi plains on a morning game drive, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel and visit crater lake viewpoints, depending on timing. Queen Elizabeth National Park is known for elephants, buffaloes, lions, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes and rich birdlife. Travellers can also add chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge, locally known as the Valley of Apes, depending on permit availability and budget. Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Crater Lakes

Depending on your location in Kampala or Entebbe, your driver guide will pick you up in the morning and begin the journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops. You will stop at the Uganda Equator for photographs and a short visit to the craft shops, then continue to Mbarara for lunch. From there, proceed towards the park through western Uganda’s farms, towns and scenic landscapes. On arrival, you may explore the crater lake area, depending on time. These crater lakes are part of the wider Albertine Rift landscape and offer views of rolling hills, open savannah, local communities and distant park scenery. After the crater lake visit, continue to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation and meals, full board: Luxury options Mweya Safari Lodge or Kyambura Gorge Lodge, Mid-range options: Elephant Hub Safari Lodge, Parkview Safari Lodge or Kasenyi Safari Lodge, Budget options: Pumba Safari Cottages or Engiri Game Lodge

Day 2, Kasenyi Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

After an early breakfast, connect to the Kasenyi plains for a morning game drive. Kasenyi is one of the strongest wildlife viewing areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park because of its open grassland and high concentration of Uganda kob, which often attracts predators. During the game drive, your guide will search for lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, Uganda kob and other antelopes. The morning hours are best because animals are more active before the heat of the day. After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before your afternoon boat safari. Later, transfer to the starting point of the Kazinga Channel boat cruise. The Kazinga Channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward and gives travellers relaxed wildlife viewing from the water. During the cruise, you may see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and many water birds along the shores. The boat cruise usually takes about 2 to 3 hours and is one of the main highlights of a Queen Elizabeth safari. Return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3, Kyambura Gorge or Katwe Crater Lakes and Return

After breakfast, choose between Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee tracking or the Katwe crater lakes scenic drive, depending on your interests, budget and permit availability.

Option A, Chimpanzee Tracking in Kyambura Gorge

Kyambura Gorge is a deep forested valley inside the Queen Elizabeth conservation area. It is known for chimpanzee tracking, forest scenery and other primates such as red-tailed monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. You will report to the gorge headquarters for a briefing before entering the forest with a ranger guide. The walk can be steep in some sections, but it gives a strong contrast to the savannah experience of Kasenyi and Kazinga Channel. This activity is optional and depends on permit availability. It should be requested at the time of booking so that permits can be secured in advance.

Option B, Katwe Crater Lakes Scenic Drive

If you prefer a relaxed scenic experience, choose the Katwe crater lakes drive. This route focuses on Queen Elizabeth National Park’s landscapes, including crater lakes, open savannah, Rift Valley views and local community scenery. You may also visit Lake Katwe, a highly saline lake where local communities have extracted salt using traditional methods for many years. This option is ideal for travellers who want photography, landscape views and cultural context without adding a strenuous trek.

Return to Kampala or Entebbe

After the morning activity, check out and begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive usually takes about 6 to 7 hours, passing through tea plantations, Ankole cattle grazing areas and rural western Uganda landscapes. A final stop at the Uganda Equator can be made for photographs and souvenir shopping. You will be dropped off at your preferred location in Kampala or transferred to Entebbe International Airport. For same-day flights, choose an evening departure to allow enough time for road conditions and traffic delays.
