4 Day Uganda Gorilla and Chimp Safari

A 4-day Uganda gorilla and chimp safari is designed for travellers who want the country’s two strongest primate experiences in one short itinerary. This safari combines chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park with mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The trip starts from Kampala or Entebbe and travels west to Kibale Forest, one of Uganda’s leading chimpanzee trekking destinations. After the chimpanzee experience, the route continues south to Bwindi, where you trek through dense rainforest to spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. This safari is suitable for travellers with limited time who want to see both chimpanzees and gorillas without taking a longer Uganda circuit.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1, Transfer to Kibale Forest and Chimpanzee Trekking

Your driver guide will pick you up from Kampala or Entebbe as early as 6:00 am and begin the transfer to Kibale Forest National Park. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops. You travel through western Uganda towards Fort Portal, with views of rural towns, farms, tea plantations and forested hills as you approach the Kibale region. On arrival, check in at your lodge and have lunch before transferring to the park headquarters for a chimpanzee trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers explain the forest rules, safety guidance and what to expect during the trek. You then enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. The trek can take about 2 to 5 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding or moving. Once they are found, you spend up to one hour observing them as they feed, call, groom and move through the forest. Return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay. Day 2, Transfer from Kibale to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the transfer from Kibale Forest to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive takes about 7 to 8 hours, depending on road conditions and the gorilla trekking sector assigned on your permit. The route may pass through Queen Elizabeth National Park Ishasha sector, known for tree-climbing lions, although sightings are not guaranteed unless a game drive is planned into the route. Lunch is arranged en route as you continue through western Uganda’s changing landscapes, including crater lake areas, farmland, savannah edges and highland roads. On arrival in Bwindi, check in at your lodge and relax as you prepare for the gorilla trekking experience the next morning. Day 3, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bwindi park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the trekking rules, group allocation, safety guidance and how to behave around the gorillas. You will then enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers to search for your assigned gorilla family. The trek can take about 2 to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas, the sector used, terrain and forest conditions. Trails can be steep, muddy and covered with thick vegetation, so strong hiking shoes, long trousers, gloves and a rain jacket are recommended. Once the gorillas are found, you spend one hour observing them. You may see a silverback, mothers with infants, younger gorillas playing and family members feeding or resting. After the experience, return to the park headquarters, then transfer back to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4, Return to Kampala or Entebbe with Equator Stop

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes about 8 to 9 hours, depending on the Bwindi sector, road conditions and traffic. Lunch is usually arranged in Mbarara or another suitable stop along the route. You may also stop at the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe for photos and souvenir shopping before continuing to Kampala or Entebbe. Your driver guide will drop you off at your hotel, residence or Entebbe International Airport. If flying out on the same day, choose a late evening or night flight to allow enough time for the long return journey. This marks the end of your 4-day Uganda gorilla and chimp safari.
