Uganda Destinations

Destinations in Uganda are of a variety and found in different parts of the country including the north, south, east and west. The destinations also differ and can be natural attractions, manmade attractions and historical sites, religious sites and so much more. Every traveler who comes to Uganda has different interests and visits any of the many destinations that the country has.

However, the most popular destinations in Uganda are the national parks which are 10 in number including Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Kibale forest national park, Murchison falls national park, Queen Elizabeth national park, Kidepo valley national park, Mgahinga national park, Lake Mburo national park, Semuliki national park, Rwenzori mountains national park and also Mount Elgon national park. Uganda also has 12 wildlife reserves which can be visited for safari.  

Bwindi national park is known for gorillas in Uganda and it is located in the south western part of the country. Gorillas in this national park can be seen in the 4 sectors that include Buhoma, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Ruhija. A gorilla permit in this national park costs 700 USD for foreign nonresidents, 600 USD for foreign residents and 250,000 Uganda shillings for East Africans.

Kibale national park is also referred to as the primate capital of the world and it is home to the chimpanzees in Uganda. Activities which are carried out when visiting this national park include chimpanzee trekking and chimpanzee habituation, bird watching, guided nature walks among others. A permit for chimpanzees in this national park costs 200 USD for foreign nonresidents, 150 USD for foreign residents and 150,000 Uganda shillings for East Africans.

Murchison falls national park is a Uganda safari destination in Uganda which is home to four of the big 5 including elephants, lions, leopards and buffalos among other wildlife species and also the famous Murchison falls. Activities to do around this national park include game drives, bottom of the falls cruise, top of the falls hike, viewing of the top of the falls, hot air balloon safaris, chimpanzee trekking among others.

Queen Elizabeth national park is also another wildlife safari destination in Uganda and it is home to the tree climbing lions and is also famous for the Kazinga channel boat rides. Other activities to do in this destination include lion tracking, chimpanzee trekking, cultural tours and guided nature walks.

Kidepo valley national park is located in north eastern Uganda and it is a remote safari destination with many wildlife species such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, giraffes, hartebeests, impalas, topi, waterbucks, oribi, hyenas among others. This national park is also neighbored by communities with unique cultures including the IK people, the Karamojong and many others who can be interacted with for an exceptional cultural tour in Uganda.  

Mgahinga national park is another destination in Uganda where gorillas can be seen and it is also home to golden monkeys. This national park is also among the smallest national parks of Uganda and part of the Virunga ranges including Gahinga, Sabinyo and Muhabura can be seen from this destination which is located in Kisoro district.

Lake Mburo national park is located in western Uganda and it is a destination where tourists can engage in nature walks and also horse rides during their safaris. This national park is located not far from Kampala and some of the wildlife species found here include zebras, buffalos, hippos, warthogs, impalas, hyenas, reedbucks, elands, waterbucks and many others.

Semuliki national park is a destination in Uganda which is known for the Sempaya hot springs or the male and female hot springs. Activities to do in this national park include nature walks, bird watching and also cultural tours.

Rwenzori mountains national park is known for Mount Rwenzori which is famous hiking destination in Uganda. Mount Rwenzori is a snowcapped mountain also referred to as the mountains of the moon and it is about 5109 meters high. The highest peak on the mountain is Margherita peak.

Mount Elgon national park is another hiking destination in Uganda and it is located in the eastern part of the country. It is located on the border of Kenya and Uganda and is about 4321 meters high.

Sipi falls are found in the eastern part of Uganda and these waterfalls are 3 in number and found at the foothills of Mount Elgon. During tours to Sipi falls, tourists engage in coffee tours, hiking to the falls, cultural tours with the Bagisu people, abseiling as well as sunset walks.

The source of the Nile in Jinja is another popular destination in Uganda. At the source of the Nile, activities carried out include boat rides, visiting the craft shops, visiting the Mahatma Gandhi monument among others. The River Nile is the longest river in the world and its source is in Jinja. Other activities done along the Nile include rafting, bungee jumping, horse rides, kayaking, tubing, zorbing and a lot more. Jinja is also referred to as the adventure capital of Uganda and is visited by both local and international tourists.

Lake Victoria is shared by 3 different countries including Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. This lake is among the great lakes of Africa and when visiting Lake Victoria there are different activities to do on the lake including boat rides, visiting Mabamba swamp, relaxing by the beaches, visiting Ngamba island sanctuary among others.

Kalangala island is among the islands found on lake Victoria and it is located south west of Entebbe. This island is a holiday spot and can be accessed by boat or using a ferry and the boats can be private boats and public boats. The ferry to Kalangala departs from Nakiwogo. Apart from the exciting boat rides, Kalangala is also a good place for beach walks, nature walks and bird watching.

Lake Bunyonyi is located in south western Uganda and it is a destination which is known for its many islands and some of the activities to do include boat rides, zip lining, batwa cultural tours, swimming, zip lining among other activities.

Mabira forest is a destination on the way to Jinja and this forest offers one of the most exciting zip lining experiences through the rainforest. Other activities to do at the destination include forest walks, archery, bird watching, camping ad so much more.

Zziwa rhino sanctuary is found in Nakasongola district and it is a destination in Uganda where tourists can get to see rhinos in their natural habitat as they roam freely. Rhino tracking is among the activities to do and other activities done at the sanctuary include the shoebill experience, canoe rides, birding and also nature walks.

Ngamba island sanctuary is found on Lake Victoria and is a destination where chimpanzees can be seen. There are about 52 chimpanzees at the sanctuary which were orphaned or rescued. Visiting Ngamba can be a half day experience and also a full day experience which involves observing the chimpanzees closely as they are fed and taken care of. Sunset cruises also take place on the island as well as fishing and volunteer work.

Kabakas palace is a cultural destination in Uganda which is found in Mengo in Kampala. visiting the kabakas palace is an informative way of getting to experience and know more about the culture of the Baganda and also learning about their history and way of life and the Buganda kingdom in general.

Gadhafi mosque is one of the religious sites to visit in Uganda as it offers a view of the rest of Kampala city from the rooftop and also has amazing architecture. This mosque is also referred to as old Kampala mosque and was built by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. It is also one of the largest mosques in East Africa.

Namugongo shrine is a religious site which is among one of the most visited Christian sites in Africa for pilgrimages. This site is dedicated to the Uganda martyrs who were killed on 3rd June by Kabaka Mwanga because of their faith. Many pilgrims gather on 3rd June every year to pray and celebrate the martyrs.

Apart from the above mentioned destinations in Uganda, there are many other places to visit around the country.
