Most international travelers arrive in Uganda by flying into Entebbe International Airport (EBB), which is the only operating international airport in Uganda – located about 45 minutes drive to Uganda’s capital – Kampala. You can book a flight to Uganda depending on location of origin through various international flight companies such as Emirates, KLM, Brussels Airways, Kenya Airways, Uganda Airlines, RwandaAir, Turkish Airways, Qatar Airways, just to mention a few.

Travel to Bwindi national park by Road:

From Entebbe/Kampala:

From Entebbe or Kampala, you can hire a car and driver or use a tour operator to organize your transportation to Bwindi impenetrable national park. The drive can take approximately 8-10 hours, depending on the route you take and the road conditions. This drive also involves stopovers for refreshment, lunch and the Uganda Equator. While the Uganda Equator you can stop for a cup of coffee, take pictures and have an experiment that proofs that the Equator line passes through Uganda. The countryside is rewarding with changing landscapes, plantations and its people.

From Kigali (Rwanda):

Another option is to fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL) in Rwanda, and then drive to Bwindi from Kigali. The drive from Kigali to Bwindi impenetrable national park takes about 5-6 hours’ drive depending on the which gorilla sector of Bwindi you will be heading to. This route can be more convenient if you’re coming from Rwanda or prefers a shorter drive. This route could even be shorter given the rolling hills of Rwanda, low speed limit, time taken clearing at the border with the immigration. This with option, you will need a minimum of 2 days to do a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi from Kigali.

Please note that travelers will be required to have a Visa to cross. You can either have an East African Tourist Visa or a Rwanda and Uganda single entry Visas. Other travel requirements like the Yellow Fever Vaccination card is required.

In case you decide to do a self drive or public option for transport, once you are in Bwindi’s vicinity, you will need to arrange local transportation to the park headquarters where all tourists meet before gorilla trekking. Bwindi forest is an impenetrable forest, there are no lodges found in the park however, you can choose to book lodges that are very close to the park headquarters for easy access. This may involve hiring a local guide or using a vehicle provided by your accommodation. There are 2 domestic airstrip available for fly ins – the nearest airstrip to Bwindi national park are Kihihi Airstrip in northern part of Bwindi national park and Kisoro airstrip in the southern part of the park. Kihihi airstrip handles landings for Buhoma and Ruhija trekking sectors while Kisoro airstrip handles landings for Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga national park gorilla trekking sectors.

Several airlines operate domestic flights within Uganda, including AeroLink Uganda Limited and Eagle Air. You can book these flights through the respective airline’s websites or through travel agencies.

Once you arrive at the airstrip nearest to Bwindi, you will need to arrange ground transportation to your accommodation close to the park. Many lodges and tour operator (Elephant Whispers Safaris) offer transfer services from the airstrips to your destination as long as you booked a gorilla safari with us.
