Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Safari
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits in the clouds of southwestern Uganda. It is the smallest national park in the country, covering only 33 square kilometers. Despite its size, it holds a large place in the world of mountain gorilla conservation. The park is part of the larger Virunga Massif. This area spans across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Three extinct volcanoes dominate the skyline here. They are Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. The park is a place of dense bamboo forests, open moorlands, and ancient volcanic peaks. It offers a quieter, more personal feel than larger parks. Many visitors come here specifically to avoid crowds. The forest provides a home for rare primates and birds that you cannot find anywhere else in the world.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga
Gorilla trekking is the main reason people visit this park. Unlike Bwindi, which has many habituated groups, Mgahinga has just one family. This is the Nyakagezi group. For years, this family was known for being mobile. They often crossed the border into Rwanda and Congo. Since 2012, the group has stayed settled on the Ugandan side. The Nyakagezi family is unique because of its social structure. Most gorilla families have one

dominant silverback who chases away rivals. The Nyakagezi group has several silverbacks living together peacefully. Mark is the lead silverback, but his father, Bugingo, still lives with the group at over 50 years old. This creates a fascinating family dynamic to watch. The trek starts at 8:00 AM at the Ntebeko visitor center. You will join a small group of up to eight people. Expert rangers lead the way, following trails through the bamboo and forest. The walk can take 2 to 5 hours. It depends on where the gorillas nested the night before. Once you find them, you spend exactly one hour in their presence. Watching gorillas is a calm experience. You might see them feeding on bamboo shoots, grooming each other, or playing. The thick coats of the Mgahinga gorillas are often shaggier than those in Bwindi because of the colder mountain air.
Gorilla Permit Prices for 2025 and 2026
Booking a permit in advance is vital. Only eight permits are available each day for the park. For the 2025 and 2026 seasons, the prices are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Foreign Non-Residents: $800, Foreign Residents: $700, Rest of Africa: $500, East African Citizens: 300,000 UGX. These permits include park entry and the services of armed rangers and guides. Compared to Rwanda, where a permit costs $1,500, Mgahinga offers a high-quality experience at a lower price point.
Golden Monkey Habituation and Trekking
Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can find golden monkeys. These primates are

striking with their bright orange backs and playful nature. They live in the bamboo zone between 2,000 and 3,000 meters high. There are two ways to see these monkeys. The standard trek allows you to spend one hour with a group. For those who want a deeper look, the golden monkey habituation experience is available. This is a four-hour encounter. You join researchers and rangers who are training the monkeys to be comfortable around humans.
The Habituation Experience
During habituation, you learn about monkey behavior and social habits. You might see them leaping through the bamboo or foraging for insects. Since these monkeys do not build new nests every day like gorillas, they are usually easier to find. The walk is generally less steep than gorilla trekking. Permit Costs: Standard Trek: $100 for Foreign Non-Residents. Habituation Experience: $100 plus a daily park entry fee of $40. The habituation process is essential for conservation and research. Your visit helps fund the protection of these endangered primates
Climbing the Virunga Volcanoes
For hikers, the three volcanoes in the park offer some of the best climbing in East Africa. Each mountain provides a different challenge and view.

Mount Sabinyo (3,669m)
The name means “Old Man’s Teeth” because of its jagged peaks. This is the most popular hike. It is unique because you can only climb it from the Uganda side. The Rwanda and Congo sides are too steep. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has built a system of wooden ladders to help hikers navigate the sharp ridges. When you reach the third peak, you are standing at the exact meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. You do not need a visa to stand in three countries at once on this summit. The hike takes about eight hours round-trip.
Mount Muhabura (4,127m)
This is the highest of the three. The name means “The Guide.” Long ago, people used this peak to navigate the region. It is a steep, demanding climb. At the top, there is a small crater lake. On clear days, you can see the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Edward in the distance.
Mount Gahinga (3,474m)
This is the shortest and easiest of the three hikes. The name refers to the small piles of volcanic stones found in local gardens. The summit has a swampy crater filled with unique alpine plants. It is a good choice for those who want a mountain experience without the extreme difficulty of Muhavura
The Batwa Cultural Trail
Before the park was created, the Batwa people lived inside the forest. They were hunters and

gatherers. Today, they live on the edges of the park. The Batwa Trail is a way for them to share their heritage with the world. During this walk, the Batwa guides show you how they lived. They demonstrate how to make fire with sticks and how to use medicinal plants. They take you to the Garama Cave. This 342-meter-long cave was once a home for the Batwa king and a hiding place during wars. The experience ends with traditional songs and dances that tell the story of their lost forest life.
How to Get to Mgahinga
From Kampala or Entebbe
The drive from the capital takes about nine to ten hours. It is a long journey through beautiful scenery like the terraced hills of Kigezi. Most travelers break the trip with a stop at Lake Mburo or the Equator. Alternatively, you can fly. Domestic airlines like Aerolink and Bar Aviation offer 90-minute flights from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip. From Kisoro, it is a 45-minute drive on a rough road to the park gate.
From Kigali, Rwanda
This is the fastest route. The drive from Kigali International Airport to Mgahinga takes about three to four hours. You enter Uganda through the Cyanika border. This allows you to land in Rwanda and trek in Uganda, saving time and money.
Best Time to Visit
The park is open all year. However, the weather affects the experience. Dry Seasons (June to August, December to February): These are the best months for trekking and climbing. The trails are drier, and the ladders on Mount Sabinyo are less slippery. Visibility is best for photography. Rainy Seasons (March to May, September to November): These months bring heavy rain and mud. Trekking is harder, but the park is very green. Lodges often offer lower rates during this time
Where to Stay
Mount Gahinga Lodge: A luxury option located right at the park entrance. It features stone cottages with fireplaces to keep you warm on cold mountain nights. Chameleon Hill Lodge: Located about an hour away on Lake Mutanda. It is famous for its bright colors and views of the volcanoes across the water. Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp: A budget-friendly option at the park gate. It is run by the local community and offers camping and basic rooms. Kisoro Town Hotels: Many travelers stay in Kisoro town, which is 14km away. Hotels like Travelers Rest Hotel offer a historic feel and good food
A Natural Experience
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a place of peace. It lacks the busy tourist feel of other parks. Whether you are standing with a silverback in the bamboo or climbing a ladder above the clouds on Mount Sabinyo, the experience feels personal. The combination of rare primates, volcanic peaks, and ancient culture makes this a must-visit corner of Uganda
